We invite you to experience Rottnest Island by foot on our 12km guided hike. Traverse spectacular coastal headlands, past stunning inland lakes and encounter both natural and man-made attractions along the way.
From “walking on water’ boardwalks, to a dip in the big blue at Little Parakeet Bay or the Basin, famous shipwrecks, and a little journey of the Islands lighthouses, this one-day island adventure is the perfect way to experience the highlights of Rottnest in a bite-sized chunk.
We start our journey on the Gabbi Karniny Bidi ” Discover the Salt Lakes” with some of the best views on the Island. From Vlamingh Lookout you’ll gain a real perspective of what you’ll find beyond the Settlement.
We then head on to Lake Baghdad where we can stop to watch the birds dancing on the Salt Lakes. These lakes have been recognised as Wetlands of National Importance. Head onto the Lakes Boardwalk to experience the illusion of walking on water. The boardwalk safeguards the significant samphire communities below. We detour up to the Wadjemup Lighthouse where we stop for a light refreshment and a moment to enjoy the beautiful view from the highest point on the island, before returning to the trail and heading to the Northern beaches.
As the day warms up, we get to cool down as we head onto Little Parakeet bay. Kick-off your shoes and walk along the beautiful clear turquoise waters before heading onto Geordie Bay, Longreach Bay and to The Basin, one of the Island’s most popular swimming spots.
We finish our hiking tour back at the main settlement.

Our guide ‘Squirrel’ was informative and accomodating for our group of Seniors (avg age 75, oldest 83!) 15 of the 25 did the extra km to the Lighthouse 12km in total and others opted for the shorter hike of 8km on a very hot day. The swim at The Basin was much appreciated. All keen to go back and explore some more of the Island. Thanks Hike Collective!
Usually go to Rottnest Island for swimming and cycling - and quokkas - so it was good to explore the island on foot. The views were spectacular and the guide was very knowledgeable on the island's history, etc
A very well organised hike on Rottnest island. We walked on the island for 15k and dipped in the beautiful clear water later in the afternoon. We were given the option of walking another 3k after a refreshing swim or hop on the bus to get to the pub for a little drink before catching the ferry back to Fremantle at 4:30 p.m. The hike leaders are supportive.
