Discover Wadjemup / Rottnest Island through story, ceremony, and trail. Each Walk Wadjemup experience begins with a cultural welcome by Noongar Elder Nev Collard, who will guide you to Vlamingh Lookout and through the salt lakes near Garden Lake. This opening hour offers a deeply personal connection to Wadjemup’s history, culture, and significance, setting the tone for the walk ahead.
From there, your guided hike continues along one of two spectacular trails with our expert guide:
September and late October – Ngank Yira Bidi (Southern Edge to Bickley Battery)
Journey out and back along the island’s southern coastline to the historic Bickley Battery. This 7 km walk takes around 2 hours, combining ocean views, layered wartime history, and the quiet beauty of Wadjemup’s rugged edge.
Mid October and November – Gabbi Karniny Bidi (Salt Lakes Loop)
Complete the full 10 km circuit of the Salt Lakes, a 2.5-hour hike that showcases Wadjemup’s striking inland heartland. Walk past shimmering lakes, discover unique island ecology, and experience the intertwining of story, saltwater, and wildlife.
Each program date includes Nev’s welcome and storytelling, followed by the guided walk. Across the series, there are four opportunities (a morning and an afternoon on each date) to experience each trail, meaning you can choose a single date or immerse yourself in both journeys.
Together, the ceremony and hike create an opportunity for connection, culture, and nature. A chance to walk Wadjemup in a way few ever do.
You’re walking Wadjemup, but you’re also helping to restore it. 100% of your ticket goes direction to Rottnest Foundation, supporting their work in revegetating woodlands, upgrading Bidi trails, caring for quokkas, and preserving stories of the land’s deep past.
Walk Wadjemup is part of the Wadjemup Bidi Discovery Project. A seasonal series of guided hikes designed for first-time hikers, slow adventurers, and curious minds craving connection to nature, culture, and community.
In a fast world, this is your invitation to slow down.
Listen to Country. Learn deeply. Walk gently.

Our guide ‘Squirrel’ was informative and accomodating for our group of Seniors (avg age 75, oldest 83!) 15 of the 25 did the extra km to the Lighthouse 12km in total and others opted for the shorter hike of 8km on a very hot day. The swim at The Basin was much appreciated. All keen to go back and explore some more of the Island. Thanks Hike Collective!
Usually go to Rottnest Island for swimming and cycling - and quokkas - so it was good to explore the island on foot. The views were spectacular and the guide was very knowledgeable on the island's history, etc
A very well organised hike on Rottnest island. We walked on the island for 15k and dipped in the beautiful clear water later in the afternoon. We were given the option of walking another 3k after a refreshing swim or hop on the bus to get to the pub for a little drink before catching the ferry back to Fremantle at 4:30 p.m. The hike leaders are supportive.
