Sarah’s Journey: From Couch To Summit
When Sarah, a 37-year-old freelance graphic designer from Perth, decided to reconnect with nature and explore the great outdoors, she never imagined how transformative hiking could be. A self-proclaimed beginner, Sarah found her confidence—and a newfound passion—through the Two Peaks Hike with The Hike Collective.
If you’re looking for inspiration to start your hiking journey, Sarah’s story might be just what you need to lace up your boots and take that first step.
Starting Out: Overcoming the Barriers to Hiking
Like many beginners, Sarah felt unsure about how to get started.
I’d always been curious about hiking, but I didn’t know where to begin. There were so many questions—what trails to choose, how to stay safe, and even what to pack. The idea of going alone was intimidating.
That’s when a friend told her about The Hike Collective. “I loved that everything was planned for me, and that I could join a group of people who were just as excited to explore as I was. It took all the pressure off.”
Finding Her Confidence
Sarah’s first adventure with The Hike Collective was the Lesmurdie Falls Hike in the Perth Hills—a trail known for its rewarding views and moderate challenge.
“The Lesmurdie Falls Hike was perfect for me as a beginner because it struck the right balance between a challenge and accessibility,” Sarah shares.
The guides were so supportive and kept checking in with everyone along the way, which made me feel at ease.
The hike winds through stunning bushland, with highlights including panoramic views from the top of the falls. “Reaching the peak was a moment of pure joy for me. The views were absolutely worth it.”
The Unexpected Benefits For Sarah
For Sarah, hiking has become about so much more than the physical experience.
Hiking has done wonders for my mental health. As someone who works from home, I spend hours at a desk, so getting outdoors and moving my body has been amazing for my mood and energy levels.
But the benefits don’t stop there. “I’ve met some wonderful people on these hikes. The sense of community is incredible—you’re surrounded by people who love being outside and share a similar mindset. It’s so refreshing.”
Sarah also appreciated the local knowledge shared by the guides. “I had no idea how much history and natural beauty was packed into the trails near Perth. Learning about the area while walking made the experience even more special.”
Sarah’s Advice for New Hikers
When asked what she’d say to someone considering their first guided hike, Sarah has a simple message: “Just do it!”
“You don’t need to be super fit or have fancy gear. The Hike Collective makes it easy for everyone, no matter your level. It’s not about being the fastest or the fittest—it’s about enjoying yourself and discovering something new.”
Her top tip? “Don’t forget water, snacks, and a good pair of shoes. Other than that, just show up and enjoy!”
What’s Next for Sarah?
After conquering 5 different hikes now, Sarah is eager to keep exploring more trails, maybe even taking on a multi day trip to Karijini. “I’m looking forward to trying the longer tours now that I’ve built my confidence. Each hike feels like a mini-adventure.” She is already planning her hiking calendar and Karijini trip for next year.
