This 10-kilometre trail winds through the rugged landscapes of Wungong Gorge, following the course of Wungong Brook as it carves through ancient granite formations. Along the way, take in breathtaking views from towering outcrops and granite walls.
Makuru signals a shift in the natural world—kangaroos (‘Yongar’) are abundant, grazing among the jarrah and marri forests, while Wardongs (ravens) begin pairing up for breeding season. The air is filled with the calls of forest red-tailed black cockatoos, Carnaby’s, and Baudin’s cockatoos, all foraging among the banksias and casuarinas. Bright pops of Blueberry Lilly (Dianella revoluta) and Purple Flags (Patersonia occidentalis) emerge, adding colour to the otherwise moody landscape of Makuru.
The Makuru Bidi experience is a challenging hike, designed for those seeking a deeper connection with the land through expansive gorge views, with an adventurous challenge. Crisp mornings and mist-covered valleys make this the perfect time to witness the shifting rhythms of nature in one of Perth’s most breathtaking hiking destinations.
The final part of the Six Seasons Trail Series will continue in Djilba. Stay tuned for tickets.
