Six Seasons, Endless Journeys

Step into the rhythms of nature and journey through the ancient landscapes of the Armadale Hills with the Six Seasons Trail Series. Inspired by the Noongar seasonal calendar, each trail invites you to experience the land as it transforms throughout the year—shaped by the changing skies, the flow of water, and the bloom of native flora. From the misty trails of Makuru Bidi to the wildflower-lined paths of Djilba Bidi, every hike is a chance to slow down, connect with Country, and walk in the footsteps of those who have cared for this land for thousands of years.

Connect With Country, Ancient Footsteps

We acknowledge the Whadjuk people of the Noongar Nation, the Traditional Custodians of the lands we walk upon. We pay our deepest respects to their Elders—past, present, and emerging—and honour their enduring connection to this Country.

For thousands of years, they have cared for these lands, skies, and waterways, guided by the wisdom of the six seasons. As we walk these trails, we do so with gratitude, listening to the stories held in the land, and treading lightly in the footsteps of those who came before us.

What Are The Six Seasons

Makuru  (June–July)

Step into the heart of winter as Makuru brings crisp air, flowing waterways, and the land’s renewal. This trail leads you through misty valleys and past cascading waterfalls, where the cool stillness of the season invites quiet reflection. The land is alive with the sounds of rain-fed streams and the calls of nesting birds—reminders of nature’s resilience in the coldest months.

Djilba (August–September)

As the season of Djilba unfolds, the land bursts into colour. Walk through a tapestry of blooming wildflowers, where delicate orchids and golden wattles paint the trails. Cool mornings give way to warming days, and the shifting skies signal a time of transition. This is a season of new life, where you can witness the land awakening, alive with the energy of change.

Kambarang (October–November)

The full force of spring takes hold in Kambarang, as vibrant blossoms and new growth transform the landscape. This trail winds through sun-drenched woodlands and flourishing bushland, where the air is filled with the hum of pollinators and the chatter of fledgling birds. It’s a time of abundance, where life flourishes in every direction.

Birak (December–January)

Birak brings clear skies, warm breezes, and long golden days. This trail embraces the dry heat of summer, weaving through jarrah forests and rocky outcrops that glow under the afternoon sun. The landscape shifts with the season—grass trees stand tall, eucalypts shed bark in ribbons, and the earth radiates the warmth of the season’s first fires.

Bunuru  (February–March)

Known as the ‘second summer,’ Bunuru is the hottest time of the year, when the call of water is irresistible. This trail follows shaded paths and cool riverbanks, offering respite beneath towering paperbarks and whispering casuarinas. The ocean and inland waterways become central to life, providing relief and renewal in the height of the season.

Djeran (April–May)

As the season of Djeran arrives, the land settles into a time of balance. Cooler evenings and dewy mornings make for perfect hiking conditions, as soft breezes carry the scent of eucalyptus through the air. The trail meanders through landscapes rich in red and ochre hues, where the first rains refresh the earth and signal the turning of the cycle once more.
